What is the difference between being a Beauty Queen and a Model?

Generally you will fall into one category or the other, only a few girls can be both winners in beauty pageants and successful international models. I have had some models that have been both with great success!

But usually the requirements are different, so if you want to be a beauty pageant winner such as Miss World or Miss Universe you will probably not be a successful high fashion model and vice versa!

Here are the differences…

Beauty Pageant Winners
Beauty Queens have to be more than just a pretty face they must have the correct measurements and not only look fantastic in a glamorous evening gown but look stunning in a swimsuit as well!

They must be able to speak well and talk on a wide range of subjects, as well as be a confident public speaker.

They must have wide range of glamorous clothes and be well groomed with long hair and makeup styled at all times.

Toned and fake tan is usually a must, as is straight white teeth!

Forget tattoos and face or body piercings – this is a no, no!

Plus you usually have to work with and or raise funds for a charity.

To be truly successful they require an experienced coach/manager to assist in their quest to be a winner!

It takes a lot of dedication and self-motivation to look after your face and body daily.

Age: They can be older then models from 18 to 27 years.
Their ideal measurements are:
Bust: 90 cm/35”
Waist: 60 cm/24”
Hips: 90 cm/35”

Height: There is not generally any height restrictions. But over 170 cm/ ‘57” is considered to be best.

To enter a beauty pageant, keep an eye out in your local media – it is great fun and you make lots of good friends plus the training holds you in good stead for your future career whatever that maybe!

High Fashion Model
A high fashion model is usually long, naturally lean and lanky with an edgy look. They are very specific in age, size and height.

Height: 175 cm/ 5’9 to 182 cm/ 6′
Age: 16 to 21 years
Size: Bust 32” to 34” Waist: 22” to 26” -Hips: 33” to 35”

These models do a lot of travel in the beginning of their career to build their books in cities like Paris, Milan and London. They do lots of runway/catwalk shows and they do heaps of editorial work in magazines like Vogue in hopes of booking fashion campaigns like Gucci, Chanel and Ralph Lauren and makeup shoots for YSL and Christian Dior.

Catalogue/Swimsuit/Beauty Models
This type of model is usually a bit more curvy and fit and they are the naturally very pretty girls.

Height: 170 cm/ 5’7 to 177 cm/ 5’10
Age: 16 to 25 years
Size: Bust: 34” Waist: 24” Hips: 34”

These types do a lot of travel to build their book but might go to Athens, Munich, Barcelona, Capetown, Miami to build their book instead. You can make a lot of money doing catalogue work and advertising and grace the pages of magazines Mademoiselle and Elle. Clients love very personable models with great attitudes and gorgeous smiles.

Editorial models at one time were the most desirable model but now with Sports Illustrated and Victoria Secret this is the most desirable model these days and many models do both swimsuit and editorial.

Plus Size Models
Whilst there is more and more plus size models it is still limited compared to high fashion models.

Height: 172 cm/ 5’ 8” to 182 cm /6’
Size: 12 NZ/AUS to 18 NZ/AUS
Age: 16+ years

Their measurements usually differ but definitely need a proportional figure and shapely legs.

These types of models do it all from runway, editorial, beauty, swimsuits to campaigns. But not all agencies work with plus size models.

Decide what type of model or beauty queen you want to be, get some training, and a successful and experienced model and/or beauty pageant manager and if you have the correct natural attributes, then go for it!

BE the BEST that YOU can BE!
